This is something K Manager job demands.
Making sense of a business demands in depth understanding of context. You do this once, twice, every day. And then increasing scope just means you have increased the number of contexts that you will cater to. That results in gradual loss of relevance to customers and lack of depth in adoption, now all your services are only lip services. Success then on is left to serendipity and that rare person to make sense of a what the "KM people" are saying.
Choice is simple to limit/not the contexts.

Inherent Capacity

Business Relvance for KM

Can we get business relevance as the first step of creating a KM program?
Is the top management ready send a directive that the time needed for the company to get ready for a change in market scenario is way too much (say 1 year) and need a knowledge strategy to help make it quicker?
Strategy group (central function/think tank) decides based on their research, there are several knowledge needs (competence) that the organization lacks even to enter certain markets and geos. Can KM help the organization get there?
Our positioning in a market is too low in the value chain (body shopping / customer managed team augmentation) and the customer businesses are going down (say like point 1 or other super system reasons), as a vendor is there a systematic way to innovate and create new markets for your customer or grow the existing one or cut their costs or whatever that has a $ +. Is this any role of KM?
As the company operations are wide spread across multiple cultures, geos, technologies, markets is it still logical to believe that a centralized decision making function possibly remote will be able to take those decisions quickly and also the right ones?

When I say KM I am not referring "the central KM function" but rather the act of managing both the knowns and unknowns of the company.
Secondly I think it is time we move away from looking at KM as a cost center and all the associated measurements and rather head into making relevance to business and operations.

Triputi on 9 Windows

The concept of Triputi (observer, observed and the act of observing) was made famous by many thinkers like J Krishnamurti among many others, actually dates back more than 3000 years.
What am I trying?
Applying this on a Systematic Innovation Technique called 9 Windows.
How
When I used to create 9 windows or facilitate to create 9 windows I was limiting my self to one thing which is the observed. So I was only interested in the adjective /adverbs of the system around which the 9 windows is drawn.
E.g. Withdrawing cash from an ATM would have at its sub system level
Instrument: Card
Identity: PIN Entered
Instrument Verification: Over Secure Network and Payment Gateway
Transaction Verification: Generated from ATM

But the power of the technique only comes to surface when you add the other 2 dimensions of the triputi viz. the act of observing and also the observer.
You can view this as an account holder, a bank, a thief, a security guard in the atm, etc.
The action itself can be viewed at different levels like interaction with the machine, system, account, bank etc.
Add all these then you see the real 9 windows.

I also had in mind a thought on trends within 9 windows, may be later in another post.

During the debate and after a long time I heard an original metaphor on project manager within an Indian IT services context from Ramesh Gopalakrishnan.

In my opinion verbs do better than nouns for any KM initiative as we need actions.
If you are looking for a name for your KM project here are some names that you can run with eKO, Kaplan, Constel, i-sKope, iKode, K Neo, K ware, Deko, Hive, Kde, Koin, Kurrency, Kogen, ekwip, Spark, alchemy, K motor.

I also wrote an MS access db to generate brand names from a list of prefix, suffix and a central syllable, interesting combinations come out but you have to work hard to find the meaning behind.

Imagining India

Nandan Nilekani made this point in an interview recently.
Vested interests by factions have divided the nation vertically examples that are prominent are language, caste, religion, IT-nonIT people, State etc. His point was to make significant integration at a horizontal level for example take healthcare, education, response to terrorism, transport, governance mechanisms, availability of credit among other developmental needs. If we as a country do this then we can possibly move ahead into a better future. Sounds possible.

Learning TM

It was a pleasure to learn Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi from Lane Wagger. The guru bhakti (devotion), dedication to help the seeker, coupled with clear concept delivery were awesome.
The way Lane oriented people to practice and shared some excellent analogies (must have been refined over the years) was really good. I distinctly remember the analogy of dyeing a white cloth in yellow to explain the cumulative effect of TM.All in all great and I have been practicing it once a day as against the recommended 2 per day schedule, but clearly see changes in how people respond and relate to me.
I highly recomend Lane to any Corporate if you are serious about TM. Right most on first row is Lane.

Here are a few points from Lane for the practitioners

1. Remember to start your TM with half a minute sitting easily, and end the meditation with 2-3 minutes of silence.
2. If you feel sleepy during TM, that is OK. Sleep comes during meditation if there is some tiredness in the body. We never force ourselves to stay alert in order to continue thinking the mantra. If sleep comes, we let it come. Just remember to meditate for another 5 to 10 minutes after waking up.
3. We do not give any importance to the meaning of thoughts during TM. Thoughts are just the by-product of the release of stress. When a thought comes during TM, we don't feel bad, we just easily return to the mantra.
4. If you feel you are too busy to do your TM, then don't do it for yourself, do it for the sake of world peace.

Reorg and communities

Once in a while usually after a re-org exercise I get to be part of discussions around forming a community. Depending on who gets what after a reorg, suddenly the idea of forming a new community pops up. A new name, new objectives, new branding, new enthusiasts etc...

Stimulus Agent Model

Ideation by Forced Association

I had this great opportunity to see an ideation in action facilitated by Prakasan and Satish. The idea was to get as many ideas as possible for a gift product to one of our clients. The technique applied was "Forced Association" between technologies and the gifting opportunity.
This triggered a further thought while I was browsing the Franchising Magazine looking for business opportunities. The idea is to break human life into several phases from infant to elderly with specific phases like school going by bands of grades, young mothers, teen, working bachelor etc and then force associate these with the franchising business areas that may be education, clothing, food etc and get as many as ideas possible to uncover feasible, profitable, business opportunities.
I think I will do this myself and post my ideas.

Archetype Homework

While I was going through a batch of AAR reports (modified to suit our needs) churned out from completed IT projects, the idea of creating archetypes occured.So I go get my method here http://www.cognitive-edge.com/wiki/index.php/Social_construction_of_emergent_properties , due to lack of participants which would have definitely added to the richness of cluster names,(It became a dull self indulgement exercise over a gloomy weekend) I go on identify clusters and their negative and positive extreme traits. I will call these edge characteristics of any archetype. Group them and there they emerge the archetypes, not exactly. I could not give them the name.

24 Nov 2007, Evening, 3 tables and one added a little later and not much participation from that table.
Started by posing the following open question"What comes in the way of idea generation?"
My table Padhma, Prakasan, Navneet and myself came out with the following thought pieces, each were of course explained within a particular context.Each table generated many such thoughts and followed it through till it was articulated well.
1. My ideas has never been looked at2. Organization is not open to the idea that is being generated3. Need for a variety of experienceFrom Experience - Thought - Idea - Expression or articulation of the idea4. Lack of Diversity / In bred group5. The very definition of an idea itself6. Complacent or Not looking beyond7. Experience to connect to different contexts and creating an idea; multiple such connections to get ideas8. Problem to get ideas9. Organization safety10. There is no percieved value in the idea11 Unable to get out of current context to value the idea
Next is each table presenting 2 of the best ideas from all that was generated.
And while presenting the contexts were remove and presented to the other group.Presented below are all the ideas that came out from the 3 tables including ours.
1. The status quo is killing the idea or the idea is percieved as disruptive and the associated resistance2. Person involved in generating the idea is emotionally attached to it and wants to take it to implementation himself3. There is limited success of ideas in the past which is stopping me now4. Next is each team is asked to present 2 ideas that could solve the issues listed above

Last Thursday when we went on a day camping, I witnessed a real wiki in action for collaboration.
When everyone is declaring "Internet based collaboration could change the way we do business". This one is a real eye opener, white boards do change the way people are collaborating and do business. It would be interesting to see what kind of portfolio of new or modified applications and processes the new proposed Fusion product from Oracle would bring in. Customers around the world would want to protect their existing investement on various pre-Oracle acquisition products, like DB2 on pSeries, SQL on Windows, with instances of World, OneWorld, Enterprise, EnterpriseOne. It is not surprising to see many customers and user community feel vulnerable to loss of investment as the product evolves more along the Oracle Applications than any of the other products. It is only right to think so and explore the options.It is almost inconcievable to rebuild from scratch an application portfolio onto an enterprise product within the time frames projected by Oracle. What would make more sense would be a phased approach to the whole migration or revamp and to build interfaces and conversions and processes linking similar functionalities between the 3 prooduct lines.
Oracle Applications( is really strong in most financial interfaces and would be relatively less effort to build them catering to PeopleSoft, and JD Edwards.Being an experienced JD Edwards developer and CNC consultant I think it is a medium level complexity to develop interfaces to Oracle Apps basically out bound. And I see in the market more and more services companies have made significant investment in catering the same to SAP and be sure to recognize that every instance is unique and what worked for one customer need not necessarily work for other.This is especially true when there are lot of customization to existing applications have been done with custom Z processes or modules for a niche requirement.But to cater to a larger audience it would be right for Oracle to invest in building such interfaces and may be do turn key projects with the Oracle E-Business Suite running parallel even before the product is released and testing these.
Communications of Oracle meeting and exceeding Fusion product development timelines as given in many news sites on the web does not hold without the line level details of what has been done with business processes, applications, infrastructure interoperability.Finally I would not want the flexible architechture with CNC in JD Edwards to go away because of this very acquistion.Is it not a business proposition to take up such services for Oracle itself than letting Others do it?

Need a stock Handle with all the buttons firmly fixed. May be a change in clutch and throttle cables.
Need a bucket seat, lower back support, pillion seat ring, and a rubber or water proof bottom.
Need a 95 carburettor jet to improve mileage per litre. Verify other gas loss avenues.
Starter cum gear lever lock pin needs original replacement (non critical)

What happened yesterday twice on road was kind of strange, 4 th gear, around 45-50 kmph, no extra ordinary road conditions except being slightly wet, and some crazy drivers, I was losing significant rear end grip and the Roadking skidded both times towards the right, but stayed on 2 wheels. But I hit neutral between 3&4 on both occasions a little late but nevertheless need more grip and check on balance.

It is all about getting used to the techniques of the Roadking, and some quick reflexes to drive safe and quick.

Everything in my bike are original except for the add on indicator lights; I have tried to retain the original looks by not doing any mods.
Couple of things to notice in my bike is that the handle is not a stock handle; I am still looking for a stock handle (Roadie, CL or DL) if you do have one and willing to sell please call me @ 98450 42771.
The seat needs a total redo.

How to get a Roadking;
You don't see a plenty of these Czech based bikes on road, but when you do see one in traffic or on the road stop and ask the driver if he was selling it. This is the most efficient way to buy an Yezdi; The sound of the raw power of Yezdi can be noticed almost in any noisy place as it stands out from the crowd.

My current Yezdi was identified thus on a traffic signal and was the second driver I asked; Well the first one was too proud and possessive which inspired me.

Where to service a Roadking;
Around Indira Nagar on 100 ft Road going towards Old Madras Road take left on 13 Main Rd and ask for Kannan Kariappa auto service. This guy is decent and charges are very reasonable. He has experience from pre 1995 when production was still on;
Commercial Street On MG Road take right towards Commercial Street and keep going straight till you cross the culvert after Commercial Street ask for Makzood Garage; This guy does only Yezdis mostly and can fix anything on your Yezdi. Very experienced and professional.

Where to go to do a hazzle free paper transfer RC + Insurance;
RTO office on Old Madras Road KA 03 circle is always crowded and too many brokers around.
Stop by at any of the vehicle consultant offices in the same BDA complex and ask if they can do a transfer.
What you (Transferee) need to obtain from the previous owner (Transferor)

The charge is INR 50 -100 depending on the insurance company.
Your new insurance policy should be issued immediately.

Carry copies of your paper always when you drive your Yezdi as bulls are stopped by many damn pigs in the city.

On Manifest and Latent Dream Content
I regard it, therefore, as my right to
establish this new view by a proper nomenclature. I contrast the dream
which my memory evokes with the dream and other added matter revealed by
analysis: the former I call the dream's _manifest content_; the latter,
without at first further subdivision, its _latent content_. I arrive at
two new problems hitherto unformulated: (1) What is the psychical
process which has transformed the latent content of the dream into its
manifest content? (2) What is the motive or the motives which have made
such transformation exigent? The process by which the change from latent
to manifest content is executed I name the _dream-work_.

On Types of Dreams
We can, in the first place, distinguish those dreams which have a _meaning_ and are, at
the same time, _intelligible_, which allow us to penetrate into our
psychical life without further ado. Such dreams are numerous; they are
usually short, and, as a general rule, do not seem very noticeable,
because everything remarkable or exciting surprise is absent. Their
occurrence is, moreover, a strong argument against the doctrine which
derives the dream from the isolated activity of certain cortical
elements.

A second group is formed by those dreams which are indeed self-coherent
and have a distinct meaning, but appear strange because we are unable to
reconcile their meaning with our mental life. That is the case when we
dream, for instance, that some dear relative has died of plague when we
know of no ground for expecting, apprehending, or assuming anything of
the sort; we can only ask ourself wonderingly: "What brought that into
my head?" To the third group those dreams belong which are void of both
meaning and intelligibility; they are _incoherent, complicated, and
meaningless_. The overwhelming number of our dreams partake of this
character, and this has given rise to the contemptuous attitude towards
dreams and the medical theory of their limited psychical activity. It is
especially in the longer and more complicated dream-plots that signs of
incoherence are seldom missing.

On Infantile dreams
Before leaving these infantile dreams, which are obviously unrealized
desires, we must not fail to mention another chief characteristic of
dreams, one that has been long noticed, and one which stands out most
clearly in this class. I can replace any of these dreams by a phrase
expressing a desire. If the sea trip had only lasted longer; if I were
only washed and dressed; if I had only been allowed to keep the cherries
instead of giving them to my uncle. But the dream gives something more
than the choice, for here the desire is already realized; its
realization is real and actual. The dream presentations consist chiefly,
if not wholly, of scenes and mainly of visual sense images. Hence a kind
of transformation is not entirely absent in this class of dreams, and
this may be fairly designated as the dream work. _An idea merely
existing in the region of possibility is replaced by a vision of its
accomplishment._

On Condensation of Dream Content
Through condensation of the dream certain constituent parts of its
content are explicable which are peculiar to the dream life alone, and
which are not found in the waking state. Such are the composite and
mixed persons, the extraordinary mixed figures, creations comparable
with the fantastic animal compositions of Orientals; a moment's thought
and these are reduced to unity, whilst the fancies of the dream are ever
formed anew in an inexhaustible profusion. Every one knows such images
in his own dreams; manifold are their origins. I can build up a person
by borrowing one feature from one person and one from another, or by
giving to the form of one the name of another in my dream. I can also
visualize one person, but place him in a position which has occurred to

like," a comparison of the original person from a certain point of view,
